The Fruit Garden
Prune summer fruiting varieties of raspberries by cutting out old fruited canes, retaining only half a dozen of the strongest new canes on each plant for next year’s crop. Tie in the new canes to supporting wires. Blackcurrants also need pruning, cutting out to ground level old stems which have fruited. They will also benefit from a high nitrogen feed of sulphate of ammonia but use carefully as it can scorch. New strawberry plants from certified virus free stock can be planted 45cms (18 inches) apart with 60-75cms (24‑30 inches) between rows. The best can be potted into 15cms (6 inches) pots for forcing under glass in spring. Keep these pots plunged outside until taken into the greenhouse.
