How to grow Primula auricula
‘Alpine’ and ‘double’ auriculas are most suited to garden cultivation. They thrive best in a moist soil, rich in humus, preferring a well-drained, sheltered site where there is a little dappled shade. Alternatively, plant them in a low patio pot or alpine trough which can be moved to a shady spot in the summer months. When grown individually in small pots they can be attractively displayed in a hand-made wooden ‘auricula theatre’.
Growing Auriculas in the Alpine House
An alpine house is an unheated greenhouse with is very well ventilated at all times and kept shaded from late March until September. This protected environment is perfect for all Primula auriculas but especially the ‘Show’ auriculas and their various forms including ‘selfs’, ‘edged’, ‘stripes’ and ‘fancies’. These ‘Show’ auriculas have powdery ‘meal’ or ‘farina’ on the flowers and foliage which heavy rain and wind will wash away when grown in the garden.
Traditionally auriculas are grown in ‘long toms’ (long narrow terracotta pots) but normal clay pots or plastic pots are also suitable. We use John Innes Potting Compost No.2 with added perlite and leaf mould (multi-purpose compost can be used as a substitute for leaf mould). Water your plants carefully in autumn and winter, more freely in spring. Regular attention must be given to removing withered leaves and re-potting when necessary.
