A Growing Passion
About Ashwood Nurseries
We are a independent plant nursery and garden centre in the West Midlands, situated in a canal-side setting in lovely open countryside.
Plants are our passion and we offer one of the finest selections in the UK, both in-store and mail order.
Ashwood’s speciality plants have won international acclaim and our award-winning hellebores are regarded as ‘simply the best’ strains ever produced.
But the story doesn’t end there… our plant breeders and growers have worked the same magic on hepaticas, hardy cyclamen, hydrangeas, conifers, snowdrops, lewisias, salvias, and Primula auricula.
Our founder John Massey VMH
John Massey is a nurseryman, plant breeder, plant collector and, above all, a passionate gardener. He acquired Ashwood Nurseries as a teenager in 1967, straight from school and with no formal training in horticulture. He has a love of plants that began as a child growing up in the Black Country where he was encouraged by his grandfather who taught him the principles of gardening.
The Ashwood Charitable Trust
The aims of this non-profit-making trust are twofold: to encourage and improve the science, art, and practice of horticulture and to support our Charity of the Year and the Adam Greathead Award.
Our history
The Ashwood story began in 1967 when Joseph and Hilda Massey acquired Ashwood Nurseries from Harry and Dora Beach. Their son John, aged 18, was still at school but quickly took over the reins of the day to day running of the nursery. His passion for plants became the driving force behind the success story that is Ashwood Nurseries today.
