Lawn Care
Continue regular mowing, gradually reducing the height of the blade with each cut and bear in mind that edging will need to be done weekly from now on.
Feed the lawn if this has not already been done. I am a strong believer in the Scots Lawn Builder range of products. If the weather is not dry there is still time to apply the Scots Lawn Builder with Moss control or if you prefer a liquid treatment (or if conditions are dry) then try Maxicrop Lawn Feed and Moss Control. Moss turns black and dies within an hour and can be easily raked out 7 to 10 days later. The grass itself quickly takes on a healthy deep green colour. If weeds and moss are not a problem use Scots Lawn Builder as a straight fertiliser.
An excellent organic alternative is Viano MO Bacter, which is an organo- mineral fertiliser for lawns with an indirect action against mosses. MO Bacter gives the needed nutrients to the lawn and ensures that existing moss is indirectly inhibited in growth as well as preventing the formation of new mosses. It also contains decomposing bacteria that transform organic waste ( thatch) into useful lawnfeed. This fertiliser works up to 3 months and has the added bonus of not causing any blackening of the mosses. With regular use it eliminates the need for raking.
If you have weed problems use Scots Lawn Builder with weed control but wait until the weather warms up slightly as it is more effective. Where powder applications are used, ensure that the grass is dry on application, but remember it must be watered in (manually or naturally) within 48 hours and the lawn kept well-watered after application. Also ensure that the application is accurate, using precise measurements and ideally applied through a Lawn Spreader.
Alternatively, use a liquid lawn hormone weed killer when the weeds are growing well as it is much more effective on active rather than dormant weeds.
Be aware that ONLY selective hormone weed killers formulated for lawns should be used and that you should not compost or use the grass clippings immediately after using them. Some lawn weeds are difficult to control, often having minute hairs on the leaf surface (e.g. Black Medick, Clover and Trefoil) and I have found that spot lawn weed killers gives excellent results provided you leave the lawn 5 to 7 days after applying the lawn weed killer and before mowing. Repeated applications may be necessary.
