Lawn Care
Chafer grubs in lawns are perhaps the number one problem on lawns: they eat the roots of grass which subsequently dies in large patches. In addition the lawn is often ripped up by large birds and sometimes foxes and badgers seeking out the grubs to eat. June is the critical month in the life cycle of the chafer beetle: this serious pest of lawns hovers over the lawn on fine days and lays its eggs. Should dry weather continue, virtually all the eggs will hatch and turn into grubs and will eat the roots of your lawn (although in a very wet June a large proportion of the eggs will rot). My best advice is to leave the lawn longer this month as the female chafer cannot so easily reach through layers of thatch or long grass to lay her eggs. There is no chemical control and the only treatment is a biological control: nematodes are parasitic on the chafer grubs but are only effective if the soil is sufficiently moist and the temperature above 15°C. They are available from May to August.
In wetter conditions, when the grass is growing quickly, twice weekly mowing can now begin but only if required. Trim lawn edges regularly and sweep up the cuttings to prevent them taking root. In dry weather water lightly aerate the turf and irrigate twice weekly if permitted. If lawn weeds are growing actively they may be treated with a liquid lawn hormone weed killer. After use do not compost the next mowing and always follow the instructions fully. Some weeds, especially those with hairy leaves, may need several applications: for example Black Medic, a common weed found on sandy acidic soils, with yellow flowers resembling clover and a black base to the petal.
