Lawn Care
Lawns would now need regular mowing and edging, keeping mower blade at least 25-38mm (1‑1½”) high. Spike established lawns with special fork to aerate and improve drainage. Give lawns a light raking to remove dead grass and thatch. Edges to lawns may be re-cut to improve appearance, leave an outward slope to minimise damage when walking near grass edges.
As soon as conditions permit and when the grass is actively growing, treat moss in lawns using Scott’s Lawn Builder with Moss Control: when the moss turns black and dies rake it out to give the grass a chance to recover. Feed and weed lawn towards the end of the month. If moss isn’t a problem apply a lawn feed such as Scott’s Lawn Builder.
An excellent organic alternative is Viano MO Bacter, which is an organo- mineral fertiliser for lawns with an indirect action against mosses. MO Bacter gives the needed nutrients to the lawn and ensures that existing moss is indirectly inhibited in growth as well as preventing the formation of new mosses. It also contains decomposing bacteria that transform organic waste ( thatch) into useful lawnfeed. This fertiliser works up to 3 months and has the added bonus of not causing any blackening of the mosses. With regular use it eliminates the need for raking.
Use a liquid lawn hormone weed killer when the weeds are growing well as it is much more effective on active rather than dormant weeds. This month usually provides ideal conditions for turf laying or minor turf repairs by reversing damaged edges and raising sunken or low lying areas. Do not apply top dressings too deeply as it may kill the turf.
Sow new lawns and re‑seed areas that are rough, patchy or damaged and protect from birds. Look out for Johnsons Anytime grass seed mixture, which germinates at much lower temperatures than other mixes.
