‘My Garden in Winter’ Lecture by John Massey
Plants, pruning, and the art of winter interest
We are delighted to announce an exciting new illustrated lecture by nursery owner John Massey.

John will explore some of his favourite plants for creating winter interest, including cyclamen, hellebores, polypodiums, and witch hazels. He will also share his approach to Transparency Pruning—a technique that aims to transform shrubs, conifers, and trees into living sculptures, while remaining true to each plant’s natural habit.
Following the lecture, guests will enjoy exclusive access to the hellebore production house, as well as the opportunity to explore John’s Garden at their leisure for the remainder of the day with the gardeners on hand to answer any questions.
About John Massey:
John Massey is a lifelong plantsman and nurseryman whose passion for plants began in childhood in the Black Country, encouraged by his grandfather. He acquired Ashwood Nurseries in 1967 straight from school, beginning a remarkable career in horticulture.
John’s Garden at Ashwood reflects his lifelong passion for plants and the influence of friends Christopher Lloyd and Princess Sturdza. Serving both as a personal sanctuary and a testing ground for his plant passions, the garden embodies John’s belief that a garden should be enjoyed every day of the year. Set beside the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal, it is a true garden for all seasons and has earned widespread acclaim in the media, including high praise from Carol Klein.
