The three wise men are an integral part of the biblical Christmas story - travelling from the East, they are said to have followed a star over Bethlehem to bring gifts to the baby Jesus. This year, to commemorate the very first Christmas, Steiff present Melchior, a honey-coloured ornament measuring 10cm in height. He wears a cotton shirt with ancient gold-coloured trimming, with a claret-coloured cloak with gold ornaments and a crown of gold-coloured trimming. His wooden chalice - also gold in colour - represents the gift of myrrh, a valuable oil used for anointment and healing. Melchior is the first of the three kings to step forward, to be followed by Caspar and Balthasar in the next two years.
