Solanum crispum prefers a neutral to slightly alkaline, well-drained soil in full sun and with shelter from cold winds or severe frosts. A high-potash fertiliser in spring will encourage a good show of flowers in summer.

It is a vigorous plant and can grow up to 20ft but is easily controlled by pruning in spring: remove a third of the oldest stems to ground level. Prune the remaining flowering shoots from the previous year to two or three buds from the main stems. Cut out dead shoots at the same time. Tie in the young shoots as they develop to wires for support.
