Castanea sativa, known commonly as Spanish sweet chestnut, is a large and vigorous tree with deeply fissured bark. Long, serrated leaves and catkins are produced in spring followed in autumn by spiny fruits containing edible nuts.
Position: Suitable for a wide range of soil types, avoiding chalk. Can be tolerant of shade.
Pruning: Hard pruning can be carried out at any time of year to promote young vigorous growth.
