Acer platanoides 'Drummondii' makes a good foil for purple and gold leaved shrubs.  Globe-headed with cream-edged green lobed leaves, it produces small clusters of red-tinged, yellow flowers in spring.  The variegated foliage provides further interest as it takes on attractive autumnal shades.  This striking tree is suitable for a medium-sized garden and will tolerate a range of soils including clay.  It copes well with air pollution.

Position: Requires a rich moist humus rich but well drained soil in a position sheltered from sun and strong winds.

Pruning: Thin some of the branches to encourage new growth up to a quarter of the branches can removed each year. It is advisable to carry this out during the summer as it will cut down on any risk of disease entering the pruning cuts.  Prune out branches that have reverted to green.
