‘Old’ roses that have one period of flowering, typically in June, include Gallicas, Damasks, Albas, Centifolias and Mosses and these all have great charm with many uses in the garden.

Position: Give them an open sunny position and any deep well-drained soil including clay.

Cultivation: They need plenty of nutrients so add Bonemeal and garden compost or well-rotted manure when planting. Rootgrow (mycorrhizal beneficial fungi) sprinkled on the roots will aid root development. Use a rose fertiliser such as Toprose during the growing season.

Pruning: ‘Old’ roses that have one period of flowering need little initial pruning other than a light trim and the removal of any dead, diseased, rubbing and crossing stems. Once established lightly prune in late summer, after flowering has finished. Congested growth can be thinned and older unproductive wood can be removed to encourage new growth from the base.
