Every now and then, a designer may need to take time and space away from a particular concept or sketch before returning to review their subject in a new light, armed with fresh ideas. This happened with Clonter Wood. Initially, Emma was not entirely satisfied with her creation. She had decided to create a surface design based upon the very simple beauty of a birds feather found on a dog walk in the countryside near her home. It was a place well known for buzzards, skylarks and delicate tree sparrows. The designer had combined the feather with a theatrical poppy in full bloom, and it was the colouration of the poppy with which she was not happy. Thankfully, on this occasion, she decided not to totally abandon the design as sometimes happens but to develop it further instead. It was a correct decision. Admittedly, designers seldom get it right first time, but when they have the knowledge, expertise and experience to turn something around, it never ceases to astound those who watch them.
Clonter Wood, like a phoenix out of the flames, was literally reborn boasting a new hypnotic colour palette, a different choice of clay and black tubelining and all of it coming together to create what she describes as being a more contemporary feel. Her ‘eureka’ moment had landed.
As it is seen today, Clonter Wood not only demonstrates Emma’s boundless talent for bold, ‘statement’ florals, but also presents a spectacular example of a close-up study, with curving and twisting feather barbs which dissipate into Florian wisps towards the base of the vase. This design is a very real testament as to what it takes to be a designer at Moorcroft: imagination, knowledge, creativity and crucially, sheer perseverance.
