- Give lilies a sheltered sunny position in the garden.
- A fertile free-draining soil is essential and a long cool root run is desirable.
- Plant 8-15cm deep (3-6in), according to bulb size, by mid-March.
- Although perfectly hardy, lilies may succumb to winter wet so surrounding the bulb with sharp sand will help.
- On wetter soils, they can be planted in deep pots in multipurpose compost and moved into the border as required, lifting out of the wet and cold until the following Spring.
