Hepatica seed must be sown fresh as viability can be quickly lost. It is essential for you to sow the seed as soon as you receive it. Any delay will result in little or no germination.
H. nobilis var. pyrenaica is a compact variety from the Pyrenees with beautifully marbled leaves. The flowers can be a wonderful apple blossom pink, powder blue or pure white, all with yellowish filaments.
Seed Sowing Instruction
Hepaticas are generally easy to germinate if a few simple guidelines are followed. Sow fresh seed while it is still green. Sow thinly in pans outside and place in a shady position. Use well-drained compost, 2 parts John Innes Seed, 1 part leaf mould and 1 part perlite. Cover with 1cm (1/2") of potting grit to deter moss. Keep moist at all times but avoid frequent light waterings. Seeds usually germinate the following spring but some Asian species of Hepatica can take two years to germinate. Prick out the seedings the following autumn into cell trays, or small pots. An ideal compost is made up from equal parts John Innes No.2, leaf mould and perlite. Pot on as necessary using the same mix, or plant out in the garden, (depending on variety).
European hepaticas should be planted on a cool, well-drained slope in a light ‘fluffy’ soil rich in leaf mould. It is essential that they are exposed to early spring sunshine, but they must receive plenty of shade immediately after flowering and especially during the heat of the summer. They will thrive under deciduous trees and shrubs or in crevices in the rock garden, performing best where there is good humidity. They respond well to a top-dressing of leaf-mould in autumn and an annual feed of fish, blood and bone in late winter. Remove old leaves just before flowering. Height: 8-10cm (3-4 inches)
