There is much about the art of William de Morgan which was simply created to make you smile. His sense of humour was a fact which designer, Nicola Slaney, also picked up when she created Fishing for Dreams. In real life, the very idea of a colourful fish leaping out of the security of its aquatic home towards a golden sunflower is so improbable that laughter may well follow. The Moorcroft designer has taken her design style directly from de Morgan, and almost mischievously including a golden cornflower under the tail of the fish fanned out just as William de Morgan would have done. That same imagery is repeated on Nicola’s Fishing for Dreams plaque, so it matters not whether you would like the design on your sideboard or on the wall. Either way, the humour embedded in both pieces is plain for all to see.
