Crataegus laevigata 'Paul's Scarlet' is a small, rounded, thorny tree with double scarlet flowers and lobed glossy leaves.  Small red haws are produced in autumn which are attractive to wildlife.  Known commonly as the Midland Hawthorn, this tree is very hardy and stands up well to pollution.  

Position: Suitable for most soil types and positions although they will tolerate shade for the best performance plant in full sun.

Pruning: Thin some of the branches to encourage new growth up to a quarter of the branches can removed each year. It is advisable to carry this out during the summer as it will cut down on any risk of disease entering the pruning cuts.
