Planting Summer-flowering Bulbs and Tubers
Plant Lily bulbs in free-draining soil that has been enriched with leaf-mould or organic matter: on heavy soils plant the bulbs on a deep layer of sharp grit. Plant deeply, at a depth equivalent to at least the size of the bulb. Pot a few up in pots for an early display for use on the patio, alternatively plunge pots in the borders for instant colour. Begonia corms can be purchased now and started into growth by carefully placing them dome side down and lightly pressing them into the surface of general-purpose potting compost in seed trays. Water in and place in a propagator or warm place. They can then be individually potted and grown on for planting out when all danger of frost is past usually in late May or early June.
Dahlia tubers can be started into growth in small pots in March and April with a view to having a hardened off large plants for planting out in late May or early June when all danger of frost is past. These will also produce cutting material if you want to increase your stock. Or you can keep the dahlia tubers cool and dry with a view to planting directly in the garden in late April or early May so that by the time it emerges above the soil again all danger of frost is past.
If your garden lacks colour in autumn why not plant some Nerine bulbs? These should be planted with the top of the neck just below ground level in a sunny, well-drained position, ideally against a south-facing wall on free-draining soil. They are guaranteed to give a breathtaking display even on the dullest autumn day from September to early November. Their loose umbels of trumpet-shaped, flowers on stems 30cm-50cm (12in-20in) tall have a faint musky perfume and are available in shades of pink and white.
March is also a great time to start into growth some of the more unusual and tender bulbs, such as Eucomis (Pineapple Flower) or Galtonia (Summer Hyacinth), that are available at this time of the year Grow them on in frost free conditions and plant out in late May or early June. Alternatively leave the plants in the pots as it is easier to bring tender bulbous subjects such as these in doors again in autumn. Make several plantings of gladioli to ensure a long season of flowering.
