Gardening Advice for June

Even when June is not as ‘flaming’ as we would like, longer daylight hours give us time to sit back for an hour or two and admire our handiwork as the garden flourishes and comes into full blossom. With virtually all risk of frost gone, this is the month for putting the finishing touches to our gardens, re-planting patio pots and hanging baskets and filling any gaps with bedding plants or tender perennials. There’s still plenty to do in the fruit and vegetable garden and these should be producing some early crops. Be aware that weeds, pests and diseases will also thrive with the increased warmth so keep an eye open for any problems.

In the garden there are  flowers and delicious scent  in abundance. Flowering deciduous shrubs take centre stage and philadelphus, deutzia and weigelias are certainly the stars of the show along with the first flush of roses. The herbaceous border should be full of colour and June sees delphiniums, poppies, foxgloves, aquilegias, iris and astilbes putting on a spectacular show.
