Lawn Care
In wetter conditions, when the grass is growing quickly, twice weekly mowing can continue but only if required. Trim lawn edges regularly and sweep up the cuttings to prevent them taking root. If the weather is dry, lightly aerate the turf and irrigate twice weekly if permitted. Most lawns will benefit from a summer feed. If a fertilizer was applied in spring, you can now feed again (leave 6-8 weeks between applications). I can strongly recommend Scott’s Lawn Builder, a slow release long lasting top quality lawn feed that is also available with weed control. This is one of the best materials on the market: although initially it appears expensive, in the longer term it last longer and produces a sturdier thick sward. Any newly established lawns should be thoroughly watered in dry spells.
If lawn weeds are growing actively they may be treated with a lawn hormone weed killer such as Verdone Extra. This gives excellent results provided you leave the lawn 5 to 7 days after applying the lawn weed killer and before mowing. Some weeds especially those with hairy leaves may need several applications: for example Black Medic, a common weed found on sandy acidic soils, with yellow flower resembling clover and a black base to the petal. It is also effective on patches of clover but the yellow trefoils will need stronger treatment such as a pinch of lawn sand or sulphate of ammonia on the crown when there is dew on the grass in early morning. Apply Bayer Lawn Disease Control to control fusarium, dollar spot and corticium and after use do not compost the next mowing.
