Lawn Care
Moss can be particularly bad during a wet February, especially on heavy soils . When conditions are dry enough, regular raking and spiking will reduce infestation. Where practical, take steps to prevent its return by alleviating the cause if possible e.g. poor drainage, compaction, thatch etc. Chemical control of moss should not begin until spring. Avoid walking on your turf unless it is absolutely necessary and soil conditions permit. Continue to clear up leaves and debris.
Where worm casts are a persistent problem on lawns brush off and spike during mild damp weather. During mild dry conditions, a light topping with a lightweight mower may be desirable, allowing the dew to dry and brushing off worm casts before cutting the lawn and collecting any trimmings.
If not previously carried out, the lawn may be top-dressed with a mixture of loam, peat and sand. Watch out for problem spots such as waterlogged or wet areas as well as areas of excess moss. These can be spiking or, in severe cases, you may need to consider installing drains. Check all electrical parts on electric mowers, seeking help from qualified experts where needed.
If you are planning a new lawn, prepare the ground now in order to give it time to settle; this will also allow weed seeds to germinate prior to sowing.
