The Fruit Garden
Protect soft fruit that is ripening from the birds by netting. Give blackcurrants a high nitrogen fertilizer, and prune immediately after harvesting. Raspberries are shallow rooting so give plenty of water during dry spells and prune as they finish fruiting. Tie in new blackberry and loganberry canes. Harvest ripe strawberries each day, removing any grey or mouldy berries. Remove unwanted strawberry runners or they can be pegged down into pots if new plants are required.
Continue a full preventative spray programme for all fruit at post blossom and fruitlet stages against pests and diseases, NEVER spraying when they are in flower as this will kill beneficial insects such as bees and ALWAYS check the instructions and restrictions. If insect pests are a problem, use a proprietary insecticide suitable for edible crops and a proprietary fungicide for most fungal diseases.
Complete final fruit thinning of apples. Summer prune cordon, fan and espalier trained fruit trees to keep a good shape and ensure that fruit trees trained against walls are adequately watered in dry spells. Prune plum, apricot, peach and cherry as pruning these species in the summer reduces the risk of them getting silver leaf disease. Remove any branches with silver leaf disease, burn and paint the wound with Seal and Heal.
