John’s Garden: Spring Open Days

Come and enjoy the magical atmosphere of John’s Garden in Spring, with its superb collections of Spring flowering subjects including fine displays of tulips, narcissi, erythroniums, trilliums and snakeshead fritillaries. The rock garden will be full of interest with many choice and rare treasures to be enjoyed while the Anemone pavonina meadow is truly a sight not to be missed.  There is a fine tree collection including a beautiful Crab Apple walk.

About John’s Garden:

‘John’s Garden’ at Ashwood Nurseries is a wonderful eight acre private garden created by nursery owner John Massey VMH. Informal borders, island beds, woodland dells, a fern stumpery and wildlife garden* are set against the beautiful backdrop of the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal.

Regarded as one of the finest private gardens in the UK,  John’s Garden has an abundance of rare plants as well as many familiar favourites.

Essential information:
  • APRIL: Saturdays 6th** | 13th** |20th**| 27th**
  • MAY: Saturdays 4th | 11th | 18th | 25th
  • 10am-4pm  (last entrance 4pm, garden closes at 4.45pm)
  • Admission: £7.50 per person**
  • Tickets are available to buy on the day (cash payment preferred)
  • There is no need to pre-book
  • Children under 12 are allowed free of charge
  • *All dates will be weather permitting
  • John’s Garden is open on Saturdays throughout the year:  more dates

  • The owner John Massey, or or one of his team of gardeners, will be in the garden.
  • The wildlife garden will be open if ground conditions permit.
  • **On the April Garden Open Days, our Lewisia House will be open to the public 10am-2pm. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see our national Lewisia Collection for Plant Heritage.
  • A delicious selection of  food and drinks are available to purchase from the tea room read more
  • In addition, in fine weather, hot drinks and light refreshments are available from the Ossbox servery (uncovered outdoor seating).
  • We are sorry but picnics are not allowed in John’s Garden.
  • We regret that dogs are not allowed in John’s Garden.
  • Toilet facilities are available adjacent to the gift shop.
  • Sensible shoes are advised in damp conditions.
Supporting our Charity of the Year and the Adam Greathead Award:

The Ashwood Charitable Trust will distribute £6.50 from each entrance charge equally between the Charity of the Year 2024 and the Adam Greathead Award. (with the exception of the NGS Opening).
