Fern Day is a celebration of ferns in the garden and is a unique opportunity to learn more about these beguiling plants from two leading experts Martin Rickard and Angela Tandy. An escorted tour of John’s Garden at Ashwood Nurseries is also included.
Martin Rickard (‘Mr. Fern’) will take an entertaining look at the stories and history of some of his favourite garden ferns with plenty of information about their special requirements.
Martin is unquestionably Britain’s leading authority on ferns: he is a past president of the British Pteridological Society and was awarded the Society’s Stansfield Medal in 2004.
He founded Rickards Hardy Ferns in 1989 and by 2002 had achieved over 30 RHS Gold Medals (including 10 consecutive Chelsea Flower Show Gold Medals). The RHS also honoured Martin with the Veitch Memorial Medal, in recognition of his advancement of science and the practice of horticulture. He has written or co-authored five books on ferns including the RHS Wisley handbook.
The tour will be led by Martin Rickard and Angela Tandy, accompanied by John, together with Jonathan Williams (Ashwood’s fern specialist) and Adam Greathead (Head Gardener)
Angela Tandy of Fibrex Nursery will give a fascinating overview of fern propagation from spores and division.
Fibrex Nursery’s legendary collection of hardy ferns is one of the the largest and most extensive commercial collection of hardy ferns in the UK. It’s a family business in Pebworth, Warwickshire, established by Hazel & Dick Key over 57 years ago, and now in the capable hands of their daughters Angela, Ursula, son Richard & his wife Heather.
Angela has vast experience of both growing and propagating ferns and over the years has advised John on the suitability of ferns for different situations in his garden, encouraging and enthusing him with her passion for ferns.
