The ‘Go Wild in the Garden’ colouring competition, which was held during our special wildlife gardening event in August, had an amazing response from children of all ages and there are some truly imaginative entries. The standard was really high which made judging very difficult, so very well done to everyone who entered.

Judging took place on September 15th and the results are as follows:

First Prize in the 10 years and over category went to Caitlyn Ella Sidaway of Wordsley who attends The Wordsley School. Caitlyn Ella’s lovely picture of a butterfly was delicately coloured with great sensitivity.

First Prize in the 6 to 9 years category went to Sophie Scrivens of Kingswinford who attends Brindley Heath Junior School. Sophie’s enchanting picture of a hedgehog family was creative as well as being beautifully coloured.

First Prize in the 5 years and under category went to Benjamin Cochrane of Kingswinford who attends Blandford Mere Primary School. Benjamin’s delightful picture of a ladybird was coloured with great care and attention to detail and was full of charm.

All three winners have been invited to Ashwood to come and receive their prize and a certificate; their pictures are on display in the Gift Shop entrance. They should all be very proud of their efforts.

‘Go Wild in the Garden’ is to become an annual event in the Ashwood calendar as it has certainly helped to put the spotlight on the importance of wildlife gardening, showing the many easy and fun ways everyone can make a few small changes in their garden to create a haven for wildlife.

It’s so important to get children involved in this message and we do hope that the colouring competition as well as the nature trail has helped to make them think about the creatures that inhabit their gardens and to remind them that we can all make a difference by creating a sanctuary for nature in our gardens.
