Charity of the Year 2015 is announced

Posted on Monday 5th January 2015

Our Charity of the Year 2015 is to be Macmillan Cancer Support. A cancer diagnosis is life-changing and affects so many things….but no one should face cancer alone and this is where Macmillan Cancer Support provides invaluable help, working in four key areas to support people affected by cancer.

Medically: by funding nurses, doctors, dieticians, physiotherapist and other healthcare professionals.

Emotionally: a Support Line and online community ensure people can get advice, information or just chat.

Practically: a number of Direct Volunteering Schemes offer help with shopping, cooking, walking the dog or getting to and from hospital for treatment.

Financially: they offer benefits advice as well as one off Macmillan Grants to support extra costs like higher heating bills, extra bedding and equipment for the home.

In the Dudley area alone over 1,000 people are diagnosed with cancer each year and in 2010 there were over 9,000 people living with or beyond cancer.Charity of the Year Logo 2015 By 2030 this number will rise to almost 19,000. In 2010 over 200 people called the Support Line, £36,000 in Macmillan Grants was awarded while the Dudley CAB Macmillan Benefits Advice Service has supported people to access benefits. How Ashwood’s fundraising is to be used:

The money that Ashwood raises will be used locally and is to be targeted entirely to help one of their most exciting projects in Dudley, West Midlands: a Specialist Care at Home partnership with Mary Stevens Hospice, NHS Dudley Foundation Trust and other local organisations. This service consists of a community-based consultant and a team of highly skilled doctors, nurses, support workers and other professionals. It offers people with cancer the specialist palliative and end-of-life care they need to remain at home or in their preferred place of care.

It is our hope that Ashwood’s fundraising will help more families affected by cancer receive the help they need at such a difficult time and we are sure that Ashwood’s many customers and friends will be generous in their support of this very worthy cause.

For support, information or if you just want to chat: call Macmillan Cancer Support free on 0808 808 00 00 (Monday to Friday, 9am–8pm) or visit macmillan.org.uk

How will Ashwood Nurseries raise money?

Our main fundraising comes from John’s Garden Open Days and Hellebore Tours (the entire proceeds from entrance charges are donated) as well as a range of Ashwood Charity Christmas cards. However there will be many other projects and activities throughout the year to support this worthy cause: please refer to our monthly newsletter for regular updated information.
