Last year's Winning Hanging Basket: Mr. and Mrs. Bunn

Every year the villages of South Staffordshire participate in a Best Kept Village Competition and there is much friendly rivalry to win the coveted title. Last year Wombourne was ranked as the third  Best Kept Large Village in the competition. Once again Wombourne Parish Council is striving to improve the environment of the village and this year sees a return of their annual gardening competition sponsored by Ashwood Nurseries.

There are 3 categories: a Best Kept Garden Competition, a Best Hanging Basket and Best Container Competition. All categories will be judged ‘as viewed from the roadside’.

We do hope that there will be an enthusiastic response from Wombourne residents. Gardening journalist and lecturer Howard Drury will represent Ashwood to judge the competition on July 27th and there will be a prize-giving ceremony at in the Council Chamber at The Civic Centre in Wombourne on September 10th (prizes of gardening vouchers are being donated by Ashwood).

With judging taking place in July, there’s no time to lose: entry forms are now available from the Civic Centre in Wombourne or from The Gift Shop at Ashwood (please ask at the counter). The closing date for entries is July 3rd.

We urge all Wombourne residents to play their part in the Best Kept Village Competition by ensuring their front gardens are looking good and, above all, entering their gardens, hanging baskets and pots into the competition. Julie Lawton, Chairman of Wombourne’s Best Kept Village committee said  of the  gardening competition: ‘By promoting pride in each individual’s own patch we hope to create a sense of pride within the wider community’
